Mission and Purpose
To unite and elevate underserved populations through community action, spiritual growth, and mentoring.
Statement of Mission and Design
The PROPEL mentoring organization was founded in June of 2004. The purpose of underserved populations through community action, spiritual growth, and mentoring. We are currently, involved in mentoring young African American males in the Birmingham area. Although we refer to our work simply as mentoring, our designs and activities encompass far more than simply lecturing to the participants. We understand that in motivating people to achieve their stated goals, we have to create a positive atmosphere in the midst of pessimism. Moreover, we have to follow a program called Active Mentoring (see flowchart) where we become integrated into the life, community, and goals of the people we serve.
We at PROPEL endeavor to promote and foster a system of success. Participants who are indoctrinated into this system will become involve in a process that alters or improves their trajectory. Just like any other systematic structure in which people are a part, it is the social and psychological inner workings of the process that impacts those who are proactive in the structure. Therefore, we at PROPEL work to ensure that every aspect of our system is positive in design and practice.
The PROPEL mentoring organization is entering into its second year of providing services to resource-poor communities. Although our primary focus has been on African American males, we recognize the importance of administering to the community in its entirety. Indeed, we want to elevate our productivity in the area of mentoring, community service, and activism. We intend on doing so this upcoming season with a host of activities designed to enhance the life-chances of those we serve.
Thank you for your interest in PROPEL.
